430. The X Factor

After all the hype, Fox's The X Factor debuted to a relatively underwhelming 12.1 million viewers with an 8.7 household rating and a 4.2 among 18-to-49-year-olds, preliminary Nielsen data show — far shy of American Idol's numbers for its Season 10 opener.

X Factor creator Simon Cowell previously stated that he wanted the US version of The X Factor to perform better than American Idol in the ratings, but the first show attracted only about half the audience numbers of the rival talent show.

422. The Debt Ceiling Debacle

WASHINGTON — President Obama repeated his call Saturday morning, for House Republicans to accept a compromise that would allow the federal government to borrow more money, avoiding a potential default on its obligations. But there was no sign of progress toward a deal after the Senate on Friday night quickly rejected a Republican plan that had passed the House only hours earlier. Senate Republicans, meanwhile, were blocking a vote on a rival Democratic plan.

421. Amy Winehouse, RIP

Singer Amy Winehouse, a five-time Grammy winner whose distinctive fusion of jazz and soul influenced other young artists, was found dead in her London home Saturday. Like many, she was 27.

The cause of death was not immediately known, but she had sought treatment, as recently as last month, for health problems that have been reported to include drug and alcohol abuse and early-stage emphysema.
