512. General Petraeus Begins to Fade Away

During their affair, retired Army Gen. David Petraeus and his alleged former mistress Paula Broadwell used a cyber trick known to teenagers and terrorists in an effort to hide their communications. Sources say they often composed draft emails which they both could read on a shared private email account -- without having to transmit the messages.

462. Moral Outrage?

Kabul, Afghanistan -- A large crowd swarmed a military base and numerous demonstrations turned deadly Friday in Afghanistan, the fourth day of fallout after NATO troops burned Qurans at a military base, officials said.

The developments came a day after U.S. President Barack Obama apologized for the incident at Bagram Airfield this week, calling it an unintentional error.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Marine Corps took a first, formal step on Friday toward possible charges against four Marines who, in a widely circulated video, appear to be urinating on the bodies of dead Taliban fighters in Afghanistan.

398. Bin Laden Postmortem

Hours after he was killed in a United States-led operation in Pakistan, Osama bin Laden’s lifeless body -- bathed, wrapped in a sheet and placed in a weighted bag -- was “eased” off the decks of the U.S.S. Carl Vinson into the waters of the north Arabian Sea.

367. The Death Of Don't Ask, Don't Tell

In a landmark vote for gay rights, the Senate voted today to advance legislation that would overturn the blatantly discriminatory and homophobic policy of "don't ask, don't tell" (DADT).  The 63-33 test vote all but guarantees the legislation will pass the Senate and reach the president's desk before the new year. Repeal would mean that, for the first time in American history, gays would be openly accepted by the military and could acknowledge their sexual orientation without fear of being kicked out.

360. Homophobia Defined

WASHINGTON — A doubting John McCain led Republican opposition to letting gays serve openly in the military, sternly clashing with the Pentagon's top leaders and warning that troops would quit in droves if Congress repealed the "don't ask, don't tell" law. In tense exchanges with Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, McCain and other Republicans dismissed a Pentagon study on gays as biased and said objections by combat troops were being ignored. (and blah, blah, blah, blah, blah)

341. Leaving Iraq

The last U.S. combat troops crossed the border into Kuwait on Thursday morning, bringing to a close the active combat phase of a 7½-year war that overthrew the dictatorial regime of Saddam Hussein, forever defined the presidency of George W. Bush and left more than 4,400 American service members and tens of thousands of Iraqis dead. (read more: http://alturl.com/vn58q)

294. Too Fat to Fight

According to a recent study on military mission readiness, an alarming 75 percent of all young Americans 17 to 24 years of age are unable to join the military because they failed to graduate from high school, have criminal records, or are physically unfit. Being overweight or obese turns out to be the leading medical reason why applicants fail to qualify for military service. Today, otherwise excellent recruit prospects, some of them with generations of sterling military service in their family history, are being turned away because they are just too overweight.
