343. Shameful Football Monikers

In 2009, The US Supreme Court let stand a decision by a federal appeals court in Washington that the native Americans had waited too long to bring their challenge to the Washington Redskins trademark, and thus forfeited any right to sue.

The term "redskins" is now, and always has been, a derogatory and offensive term, according to a friend-of-the-court brief filed by the National Congress of American Indians and other major native American tribes and groups.

"The organizations and Indian tribes stand together to express with one voice their collective opinion on the fundamental fact underlying this case: the 'Redskins' trademark is disparaging to native Americans and perpetuates a centuries-old stereotype of native Americans as 'blood-thirsty savages,' 'noble warriors,' and an ethnic group 'frozen in history.' "

Here, here.

  1. aActually ... as white trash I feel left out that no professional sports team has deigned to honor me like this. Damn injuns should feel proud to be represented by this team and its enlightened adult ownership. I'm sure the Saudi Royals would do anything to be similarly honored (ragheads, camel f**kers, hajjis) ... but their ill-earned petro dollars won't buy them this honor, there are some things money just can't buy ... like poverty.

  2. You forgot to mention another disparaging team name. The Notre Dame "Fighting Irish."
