277. Virginia's "Confederate History Month"

Virginia Governor Robert F. McDonnell proclaimed April "Confederate History Month. Here's an excerpt of the proclimation from his website:

WHEREAS, this defining chapter in Virginia's history should not be forgotten, but instead should be studied, understood and remembered by all Virginians, both in the context of the time in which it took place, but also in the context of the time in which we live, and this study and remembrance takes on particular importance as the Commonwealth prepares to welcome the nation and the world to visit Virginia for the Sesquicentennial Anniversary of the Civil War, a four-year period in which the exploration of our history can benefit all;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Robert McDonnell, do hereby recognize April 2010 as CONFEDERATE HISTORY MONTH in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.

  1. I'm really glad you did this cartoon. Well done. It's ridiculous (the proclamation), especially since he left out any mention of slavery in Virginia.

  2. Thanks for the comment! I just recently enjoyed your patio photo-turtorial. I may be replicating it very soon - if my wife gets her way.

  3. I find your drawing of the KKK robe quite offensive. Study your history, if they haven't already rewritten it....Virginia did not secede from the Union because of slavery. Excessive taxing of the South along with no state's rights were more catalyst for the war than slavery. Besides, the actual abolition of slavery occurred during the war, not prior to it. I am descendent to those from the Confederacy.....and that was no more my choice than those who are born of a different race! Your adding the KKK robe to a picture of the Confederacy is an ignorant slight on those who fought for their land and state; and it is as bad as making a generalized statement that all Confederates were fighting for slavery, which is a blatant falsehood!
