486. Deepsea Challenger

Film director and explorer James Cameron became the first human to travel on his own to the world’s deepest abyss, the Challenger Deep, which lies 62 miles southwest of Guam in the Pacific Ocean in the Mariana Trench. Mr. Cameron found a bleak terrain that was all but barren of life.
Mr. Cameron’s achievement is a triumph of engineering. At 35,756 feet below the surface — two leagues under the sea — where his sub, the Deepsea Challenger, hit bottom.
The dive had been attempted only once before, in 1960, when Don Walsh, a retired United States Navy captain, and Jacques Piccard, a Swiss engineer, reached the spot in the Navy submersible Trieste, but their view was obscured by vast diatomaceous ooze. Here's what they didn't see.

483. Obama Goes to Florida

Police in Sanford, Fla., have become the target of anger and protest around the country for failing to arrest George Zimmerman after he shot 17-year-old Trayvon Martin.
But Florida's "Stand Your Ground" law may have given them little choice.
That law grants immunity to anyone who uses deadly force, inside or outside his home, if he can reasonably claim he was defending himself.
According to 911 telephone records, 28-year-old George Zimmerman described Trayvon as a suspicious-looking black male wearing a hooded sweat shirt.

476. Obama and Netanyahu Confer

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Taking sharply different stands, President Barack Obama urged pressure and diplomacy to prevent Iran from getting a nuclear bomb while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu emphasized his nation's right to a pre-emptive attack. Even in proclaiming unity on Monday, the leaders showed no give on competing ways to resolve the crisis.
and in related news: (CBS News) At a news conference at the White House on Tuesday, President Obama lashed out at Mitt Romney and the other GOP presidential candidates for "the casualness with which some of these folks talk about war," saying their rhetoric on Iran reflects the fact that they "don't have a lot of responsibilities."
and in related news:
UNITED NATIONS – Key U.N. Security Council members began discussing a possible new resolution Tuesday that demands an end to the violence in Syria, first by government forces and then by opposition fighters, in hopes of overcoming opposition from Russia and China.

473. NFL Bounty Hunters

The NFL on Friday said an investigation by its security department found that Williams and several New Orleans Saints players employed an illegal bounty system, financially rewarding defensive players for big plays, including knocking opponents out of games during the 2009-11 seasons. After details of the NFL's probe were released, five former Redskins, including defensive end Phillip Daniels, and a former coach told The Washington Post that Williams had a similar system with Washington.

470. Davy Jones, RIP

Marcia Brady wasn't the only girl who loved Davy Jones. But she certainly was the most memorable.
Fittingly, Maureen McCormick has spoken out in the wake of The Monkees' singer's death, paying tribute to the man who will forever be—at least partially—remembered as the dreamiest TV prom date ever to hit prime-time.
"Davy was a beautiful soul who spread love and goodness around the world," the erstwhile Brady Bunch star said in a statement. "He filled our lives with happiness, music and joy."
